We were thrilled when Matthew joined the GBW family in July 2017!  He adds years of experience and knowledge to servicing our customers.  Matthew is a violin maker and restoration expert.

Matthew is a native of small farming community in Spencerville, Ohio. Most of Matthew’s formal education has taken place in Indiana where he received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Saint Meinrad College and School of Theology. In 2002 Matthew completed the Associate’s Program in violin making at Indiana University of Bloomington.

In 2003 Matthew worked at The Potter Violin Company in Bethesda, Maryland where he was in charge of repairing and maintaining over 3,000 rental instruments. On June 6th of 2004 he moved to Greenville South Carolina where he worked for Bernhardt House of Violins doing all types of restoration of violin family instruments and bows for 6 years. In 2014 Matthew returned to Greenville and Bernhardt House of Violins for another 3 ½ years. Now he is Branching out to work with Brian Gencarelli at Gencarelli Bass Works in Fountain Inn, South Carolina.

Matthew has worked on instruments running the whole gambit pf price value, anything from the inexpensive internet bargain to the treasured, classic Italian masterpiece. His restoration accomplishments range from simple finish retouches and bridge replacements to complex soundpost patches requiring plaster casts and weeks of detail work. As well as fine restorer, Matthew has made several of his own violins and continues to practice his craft in his downtime.
